Microsoft removes "Release Waves" in Dynamics 365 and Power Platform: hello, rolling updates

The pace of innovation in Microsoft's enterprise ecosystem has just taken a radical turn. The company has officially announced that it will retire the semi-annual release model (the famous "Release Wave 1" and "Release Wave 2") for Dynamics 365 and Power Platform starting in September 2026.

From the big waves to the "Always-On"

Historically, the community and customers eagerly awaited the big release notes in the spring and fall. However, with the current pace of AI-driven development, waiting six months to reveal new capabilities no longer makes sense. Instead, Microsoft is adopting an "always-on" disclosure model.

From now on, new functionalities and capabilities will be published the moment plans are committed and ready to be shared, eliminating the artificial retention of information until a calendar event.

The New Destination: AI at Work Roadmap

To centralize this continuous avalanche of novelties, Microsoft has introduced the AI at Work roadmap. This will be the one-stop destination to discover future features, track the progress of deployments, and plan adoptions across the ecosystem, including Dynamics 365, Power Platform, Microsoft 365, and the different Copilot offerings.

This unification seeks to reflect the reality of modern organizations: the barriers between an ERP, a CRM, and desktop productivity tools are becoming thinner, especially when generative AI acts as a common thread.

What about deprecations?

Although the way new features are announced changes, the process of retiring features (deprecation) follows its own lifecycle. Microsoft stresses that deprecation and deletion notices will continue to be published in official documentation on an ongoing basis, giving organizations the necessary advance notice to update their systems without abrupt interruptions.
